Working with a work platform

The rules for working with a work platform have been tightened up as of July 1, 2020.

When working at height, a hoisting or lifting machine with or without an integrated work platform may be used. Such a machine must be designed and equipped for transporting people and must be used correctly. Everyone standing in a work platform must be able to rely on safety being guaranteed. The rules have been tightened up for this purpose.

The Ministry of Social Affairs and Employment has decided to amend Article 7.23d of the Working Conditions Decree as of July 1, 2020. The aim of the amendment is to reduce the improper use of work platforms on hoisting equipment that has not been specifically declared suitable for transporting persons by the manufacturer of the machine.

Working with a work basket

Working from a work basket or work platform suspended from a hoisting device (crane) is prohibited in principle. Due to the frequent improper use of work baskets and work platforms, prompted by Article 7.23d (old) of the Working Conditions Decree, the legislator has tightened up this article.

In exceptional situations and under strict conditions, it is permitted to work from a work basket attached to a crane. However, since July 1, this must be reported in advance to ISZW.

The basis of this change is that the lifting and moving of persons may only be carried out in work equipment specifically designed for this purpose.

So, are you buying or renting a hoisting or lifting machine with an integrated work platform for working at height? Then this machine must be intended and equipped for transporting persons and must comply with the relevant safety requirements of the Commodities Act Decree on Machines. This results in a CE marking on this hoisting or lifting machine.

Work in work platforms

You must carry out the work from the work platforms. You may not step in and out of the work platform on surfaces that are not load-bearing in order to work at height.
